A lip booster hydrates the lips from within and improves their softness and natural sheen without enlarging them or changing their shape. It suits people with dry or cracked lips or fine lip lines who want a very natural result. If you want volume or clear definition, lip filler is usually the better choice.
What is a lip booster?
A lip booster is a series of very small injections of a hydrating substance, usually light hyaluronic acid (non-cross-linked or lightly cross-linked), placed in tiny amounts within the lip tissue. Hyaluronic acid attracts and holds water, so the lips become softer and better hydrated, without the visible volume that filler creates.
Lip booster versus lip filler
| Lip booster | Lip filler | |
|---|---|---|
| Aim | Hydration, softness, natural sheen | Volume, definition, reshaping |
| Product | Light hyaluronic acid | Cohesive hyaluronic acid |
| Change in shape | Barely noticeable | Visible, according to plan |
| Sessions | Usually two to three to start | Usually one, then review |
| Duration | Shorter, usually several months | Longer, often 6 to 12 months in the lips |
Who is a lip booster for?
- Chronically dry lips or repeated cracking despite using balms.
- Fine vertical lines on the lips.
- Loss of freshness and colour with age, or dull-looking lips.
- Anyone who wants a very natural result with no added volume.
- A first step for people not yet ready for filler.
- A complementary treatment after lip filler to improve tissue quality.
When is a lip booster not suitable?
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- An active cold sore on the lip, or infection or inflammation in the area. People with frequent cold sores may need preventive treatment before the session.
- A previous allergy to hyaluronic acid or lidocaine.
- Permanent or unknown filler already in the lips.
- If the real goal is bigger or reshaped lips, because a lip booster will not achieve that.
How we decide: the assessment
- We listen to your concern: is it dryness and cracking, fine lines, or a wish for volume?
- We examine the lips: skin quality, lines, symmetry and borders.
- We rule out other causes of dryness: such as some acne medicines, allergic lip inflammation or a lip-licking habit, which need different treatment first.
- We choose the right treatment: lip booster, filler, or both in stages.
The product: what exactly is injected?
Usually a light hyaluronic acid designed to improve tissue quality, some with added ingredients such as amino acids or antioxidants. What sets these apart from lip filler is that they are lighter and more fluid, spreading through the tissue to hydrate it rather than building volume. The product is chosen according to the condition of your lips and your goals, and all are hyaluronic acid products that can be dissolved if needed.
How much product and how many sessions?
- Amount: decided after examination, depending on how dry the lips are, the lines present, the size of the lips and the product used. The aim is always hydration without any noticeable increase in volume.
- Sessions: usually two to three, about 4 weeks apart, because the improvement in hydration builds over sessions.
- Maintenance: a session roughly every 4 to 6 months to keep the result, depending on your body and lifestyle.
What happens during the session
- Consultation and photographs: assessment of the lips, agreeing the plan, and before photographs.
- Numbing: a numbing cream on the lips for 15 to 20 minutes; most products also contain a local anaesthetic.
- Disinfection and injection: the area is disinfected and small amounts are injected with a very fine needle. The session takes around 15 to 20 minutes.
- Straight afterwards: small bumps may appear where the injections were given, usually settling within hours to a day or two.
Results and aftercare
- Results: the lips feel softer and more hydrated within days, with a clearer improvement after the second session.
- Swelling: usually mild, lasting one to three days.
- Avoid pressing or massaging the lips, and wait a day before using lipstick.
- Avoid high heat and strenuous exercise for one to two days.
- Keep moisturising your lips and use a lip balm with sunscreen.
Side effects and how we manage them
Common and mild: slight swelling, small bruises and temporary bumps where the injections were given.
Less common: a cold sore flare in people prone to them, which is why we ask about this beforehand and prescribe preventive treatment if needed.
Rare but important: a blocked blood vessel. This is very rare with light products and small amounts, but possible with any lip injection. Signs are severe, unexpected pain and the lip turning white or blue. It is treated immediately by dissolving the product with hyaluronidase, which is why injections should be done by a qualified doctor in an equipped facility.
Frequently asked questions
Will a lip booster make my lips bigger?
No. The lips may look plumper with hydration, but their shape and size do not change noticeably. If you want volume, lip filler is the better option.
Does it hurt?
With numbing cream it is usually described as a series of light pinpricks.
How long does it last?
Usually several months, which is why we suggest a maintenance session roughly every 4 to 6 months.
Can it be combined with lip filler?
Yes. Sometimes we start with filler to define the shape and then use a lip booster to improve tissue quality, or the other way round, depending on the case.
Is it suitable for men?
Yes, especially for dry, cracked lips, since it does not change the shape.
